After nearly seven years leading the Bernalillo County Fire Rescue (BCFR), Chief Greg Perez has announced his departure from the position. Perez will continue his work with Bernalillo County as deputy county manager of the Public Safety Division.

Perez began his career in fire service in 1998 as a volunteer firefighter for the Village of Los Ranchos and was appointed chief in 2005. When BCFR took over the Los Ranchos Fire Department in 2009, he became battalion commander for the county. He progressed through various roles and was named fire chief in 2018.

During his time as chief, Perez led significant growth within BCFR by expanding its fleet and increasing personnel to over 300 members. Under his leadership, two new fire stations were added, a Public Safety Training Academy was opened, and funding was secured for relocating station 36, which is expected to begin construction this spring. Perez also focused on mental health support by providing essential resources to members needing assistance.

Perez will remain acting fire chief until a successor is chosen through a nationwide search. The recruitment process will seek candidates with experience in fire service, leadership skills, and community engagement. Input from county officials, fire personnel, and key stakeholders will be part of the selection process. Interested applicants can submit their applications at www.bernco.gov/jobs soon.
