Bernalillo County has implemented a new safety measure to address speeding and reduce vehicle crashes on Shelly Drive SW. A mobile speed camera was recently installed between the frontage road to Interstate 40 and Speedway near the Metropolitan Detention Center, an area identified for its high number of accidents.

Since its activation on February 5, the camera has recorded 308 traffic violations by February 20. Offenders were traveling at an average speed of about 60 mph, while the posted speed limit is 45 mph.

The county introduced its mobile speed camera program in December 2024 due to growing concerns over increased speeds and severe crashes. Currently, six cameras are operational across various locations in the county, with plans to add six more within two months.

Violations caught by BernCo's speed cameras result in a $100 fine. Offenders can choose to pay this fee or opt for community service with Bernalillo County’s Clean Team, Animal Care Services, or at one of BernCo’s community centers. The revenue from these citations is allocated towards enhancing roadway safety within Bernalillo County.
