Bernalillo County is seeking $2.3 million in funding from state lawmakers to enhance security and operational equipment at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC). This request is part of a broader list of project proposals being presented during the current 60-day legislative session.

The funding aims to address critical infrastructure needs, including the installation of a new cell door food pass system and replacement of outdated boilers. The existing cell door portals are considered a safety risk as they allow inmates to reach staff on the other side. The proposed new design includes barriers to prevent such contact, enhancing staff safety.

Additionally, two boilers at MDC have reached their end-of-life stage, leading to frequent failures and costly repairs. Replacement boilers are expected to reduce system interruptions and ensure that any necessary repairs can be conducted efficiently.

Opened in 2003, MDC is New Mexico's largest county jail, with a capacity for 1,950 inmates within its 600,000 square-foot facility located on 155 acres.
