A Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center corrections officer has been commended for his actions during an incident in a courtroom. Officer Steven Jackson was involved in escorting inmate Alexander Segura Ortiz for a hearing when an individual from the gallery leaped over a railing and attacked the inmate.

Officer Jackson promptly responded by calling for assistance and placing himself between the attacker and Segura Ortiz to shield the inmate from further harm. The situation escalated as additional individuals joined in, attacking both the inmate and each other.

Utilizing his training, Officer Jackson deployed a taser using its drive-stun function to disperse the attackers and ensure the safety of Segura Ortiz. Despite sustaining minor injuries, Officer Jackson managed to control the situation effectively.

Officer Jackson has been with MDC since May 2007 and has served on the Transport Unit for around two years.
