Bernalillo County, New Mexico is seeking $1 million in capital outlay funding for 2025 to enhance its Youth Services Center (YSC). The funds are intended for phase one of facility improvements aimed at upgrading medical care for residents in juvenile detention. Planned enhancements include a 2,400 square-foot expansion to accommodate a new nurse’s station, waiting area, and expanded medical and dental exam rooms.

“This project reflects our commitment to providing quality care and services for the youth being housed in our facility,” stated Greg Perez, Deputy County Manager of Public Safety.

The overall cost of the project is estimated at $10 million. So far, $9.2 million has been secured through New Mexico legislative funds, general obligation bonds, and Bernalillo County general funds, covering 93% of the required budget. The county's 2025 capital outlay request aims to secure the remaining amount needed to complete the project.

“We are grateful for the support received so far and look forward to completing this critical initiative,” said Tamera Marcantel, Youth Services Director.

The YSC is one of four juvenile detention centers in the state. It currently has agreements to house youth from 25 counties as well as from the Pueblos of Isleta, Santa Ana, and Zia in addition to Bernalillo County.
