Bernalillo County, New Mexico is engaging with state lawmakers during the ongoing 60-day legislative session to present a detailed list of project requests. The county has identified key priorities for 2025, focusing on affordable housing, behavioral health care, public safety, early childhood education, and expanding its animal care facility. Each of the county's five districts has also specified its own legislative priorities.
In District 4, there is a push for funding to enhance two community centers and make improvements to Second Street and the Alameda Drain Trail. "When we at Bernalillo County can partner with the state Legislature and pool our resources, we really can make an impact," stated District 4 Commissioner Walt Benson.
The proposed projects aim to address two main concerns for both the county and Commissioner Benson. "One is keeping commuters and drivers safe, reducing frustration and commute times," said Commissioner Benson. "Another is additional recreational outlets for our community. The community centers are great at doing that, and they help keep kids safe too when we can give them productive outlets for their energy."
District 4 encompasses the northeastern side of Cibola National Forest near Sandia Peak, Sandia Heights, extending west to North Albuquerque Acres, parts of the North Valley, the far north Bosque, and Paradise Hills.
