The Bernalillo County Commission has approved a measure to address the affordable housing shortage in the area. Sponsored by County Commissioner Barbara Baca, the initiative aims to establish a Housing Development Services Division. This new division will report directly to the County Manager and will be responsible for overseeing various aspects of affordable housing, including acquisition, funding, and construction.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development suggests that no more than 30% of monthly household income should be allocated to housing costs. For a median monthly household income of $4,894, this translates to a maximum of $1,468 per month for housing expenses.

County Manager Cindy Chavez is tasked with researching funding sources, staffing needs, and professional services required for the new division. She is expected to present her findings and a detailed plan at the Bernalillo County Commission's Administrative Meeting on February 25, 2025.
