WASHINGTON—Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) released the following statement following the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down President Biden’s executive order to cancel student loan debt. 

“This decision is devastating for 216,000 New Mexicans who are eligible for student debt relief,” said Rep. Stansbury. “I am outraged this right-wing court is preventing thousands of New Mexicans from starting a business, buying a home, and getting ahead. The average student loan borrower in our state holds $30,000 in crushing loan debt—the executive order would have helped our communities move forward. With this decision, it’s imperative that Congress steps in and passes legislation to cancel student loan debt and provide tuition-free college for all. I hope the rest of the county follows the success of our state in making public college tuition-free. I will not stop fighting until we create a world where future generations are not held back because of crushing debt.”
