ABQ BioPark is marking Earth Day 2025 with two notable events aimed at supporting endangered species. On Saturday, April 26, the BioPark will host an e-waste recycling opportunity and an adults-only event titled Great Ape-ril After Hours.
The day begins with an e-waste recycling event at Tingley Beach, in collaboration with ACTenviro and New Mexico Computer Recyclers. From 8 a.m. to noon, individuals can drop off items such as cell phones, cables, and keyboards at the site's north parking lot.
"‘The ABQ BioPark always accepts mobile phones,’ said Allyson Zahm, ABQ BioPark Guest Experience Manager. ‘However, as part of Earth Day celebrations, our amazing partners will be able to accept electronics of almost any size and type to keep reusable materials out of our landfills.’”
This initiative highlights the importance of recycling items like mobile phones, which contain coltan. Coltan mining is detrimental to habitats in Africa, affecting species such as gorillas. By recycling, valuable materials like coltan can be reused, reducing the need for further mining.
Participants recycling any e-waste will receive a ticket for a complimentary carousel ride during their next Zoo visit. The event does not accept certain items, including TVs, microwaves, and refrigerators. Details about acceptable items are available on the BioPark's E-waste Recycling event page.
The evening event, Great Ape-ril After Hours, welcomes adults to the Zoo from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to engage with the resident primates, including chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. Guests can explore behind-the-scenes areas and interact with the animal care team.
The event also offers a preview of a new project and a chance to observe primate training sessions. Tickets, priced at $110 each and available only online, support great ape conservation through the New Mexico BioPark Society. Each ticket includes a complimentary drink, with additional refreshments available for purchase.
Further details and ticketing information are provided on the Great Ape-ril After Hours event page.
