Despite efforts, Steven Gurule, 33, died Friday at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center where he was held on a pretrial detention hold since January 23, 2024. Around 8:16 a.m., MDC staff found him unresponsive, and life-saving measures were attempted by MDC staff along with the UNM Hospital medical team. "Despite their efforts," Gurule was pronounced dead at 8:41 a.m. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene following the standard procedures and is part of the investigation by the MDC Office of Professional Standards and the Sheriff's Office. As per the routine, the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator will determine the cause of death. Gurule's next of kin was notified.
