The Office of the Bernalillo County Assessor has seen the addition of eight newly certified appraisers as it continues to enhance its appraisal staff. Assessor Damian Lara emphasized the dedication of the team, saying, “This year’s certification pay is a reflection of the qualifications of our staff and their vast accomplishments.” He also stated, “I believe assessment knowledge and a willingness to learn and improve should be rewarded.”

According to New Mexico State law, appraisers are eligible for additional pay for completing approved courses offered by the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) under the State Assessors Certification Program. Following his election in 2022, Assessor Lara extended the certification pay to all staff members, regardless of their position, with approval from the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners.

The structured incentive pay for employees includes $750 for one state certificate, $2,500 for two, $5,500 for three, and $9,000 for four certificates. In 2022, the staff earned just under $255,000 in incentive pay, which increased to nearly $398,000 in 2023 and rose again to $448,000 by 2024.

Lara noted that “while employees get incentive pay, the real winners here are the property owners who benefit from having certified staff in the Office of the Assessor.” This commitment to professional development highlights the office's dedication to accuracy and expertise in property assessments. Currently, the Office of the Assessor employs over 110 individuals.
