Kate Alderete named director of the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County library

The City of Albuquerque’s Department of Arts & Culture has appointed Kate Alderete as the new director of the Public Library of Albuquerque-Bernalillo County. Alderete's career is marked by her contributions to library leadership, public service, community engagement, and advocacy.

Alderete previously held the position of Deputy State Librarian for New Mexico, managing various statewide library services. These included the bookmobile program, books-by-mail for rural and homebound residents, and a delivery network linking over 140 libraries across New Mexico. She also served as the Library Director for the Taos Public Library, where she bolstered community partnerships and elevated library programming.

"Albuquerque's libraries are the heart of our community's story,” Alderete stated. “I'm honored to join the Department of Arts & Culture and contribute to writing its next chapter as Library Director."

Her background features roles at the United World College of the American West and the Colorado Talking Book Library, underscoring her dedication to accessibility and lifelong learning. Alderete's academic credentials include a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Denver and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Prince Edward Island.

As an advocate for libraries, Alderete has participated in American Library Association committees, such as the Rural, Native, and Tribal Library Committee and the Committee on Legislation. Additionally, she led the New Mexico Library Association as its President from 2022 to 2023.

"Kate’s proven leadership and dedication to accessibility of information will help shape our library system and see that it meets the evolving needs of our community,” stated Arts & Culture Director Dr. Shelle Sanchez. “We are excited to see how her vision and expertise will inspire innovation and enhanced access to resources."

“Kate Alderete brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to community-centered service,” commented Mayor Tim Keller. “Her leadership will help ensure that our libraries continue to be vibrant, inclusive spaces where people of all ages can learn and connect."

In addition to her professional work, Alderete is passionate about the outdoors, family, and supporting literacy and intellectual freedom. She is eager to lead the library system forward, maintaining its role as a dynamic and inclusive environment for everyone.
