Bernalillo County and the Albuquerque Sign Language Academy (ASLA) are set to commemorate a significant stage in the construction of ASLA's new campus with a Beam Signing Ceremony. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, at 1 p.m. at the future school site located at Tyler Road and Edith Boulevard NE, north of Osuna Road. This event signifies a major advancement for both ASLA and the local community.

The new campus is being erected on property owned by Bernalillo County, representing a collective commitment to inclusive education. Since its opening in 2010, ASLA has seen its enrollment more than double and maintains a waitlist, underscoring the need for its dual-language model, which serves students who are deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing across the Albuquerque area.

“The partnership between Bernalillo County and the Albuquerque Sign Language Academy exemplifies our shared commitment to inclusive education,” states District 1 Commissioner Barbara Baca. “We are proud to support ASLA’s mission and look forward to the positive impact this new campus will have on our community.”

“The entire ASLA Community is excited to see our dream become a reality,” expresses Executive Director Rafe Martinez. “This historic achievement could not have happened without the unwavering partnership and support from Bernalillo County, the State of New Mexico, and a myriad of contributing believers. Our new home will enable us to serve our deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing students better than ever before as we continue to build an accessible future for our community.”

The construction of the school is facilitated through partnerships among Bernalillo County, the U.S. Department of Education, RMKM Architecture, E.B. Construction, and other project members.
