The Parks & Recreation Department’s (PRD) newest pickleball courts at Pat Hurley Park have been completed, marking the first dedicated pickleball courts in the southwest quadrant of the City. The $84,000 project, funded by GO Bonds, involved upgrading the existing court complex by resurfacing two tennis courts for continued tennis play and converting the other two tennis courts into four dedicated pickleball courts.

Mayor Keller expressed the city's commitment to enhancing the community's quality of life through projects like these, stating, "We continue to invest in quality-of-life projects across our city that strengthen our community and promote healthy activity for all ages." He emphasized the broader impact of such initiatives by adding, "This is not just about adding courts; we’re creating connection points that will generate fun and memories for generations of families."

Julie Radoslovich, president of the Pat Hurley Neighborhood Association and vice chair of Metropolitan Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, shared her excitement about the new addition, saying, "We are delighted the City has added these pickleball courts as a tool to activate our local park and keep neighbors connected through sport and exercise." She invited neighbors to join in the fun and engage in this dynamic game.

PRD Director Dave Simon highlighted the inclusivity of the project, declaring, "Pat Hurley Park is now fully open and available for both tennis and pickleball." He also mentioned that this endeavor is part of a broader plan to resurface tennis courts and introduce more pickleball courts across the city.

Albuquerque residents are encouraged to celebrate the opening of the new courts at Pat Hurley Park during a free community event scheduled for Saturday, March 2, 2024, from 10 a.m. until noon. The event will offer free tennis and pickleball instruction, emphasizing the city's dedication to promoting active and healthy lifestyles.

The expansion of pickleball facilities is not limited to Pat Hurley Park, as PRD currently operates 30 dedicated pickleball courts and 48 courts lined for both tennis and pickleball. Additionally, the construction of Albuquerque's premier pickleball complex at Manzano Mesa Park is underway, with Phase 1 set to add 15 more pickleball courts, lighting, shade, and restroom facilities by this spring.
