The ABQ BioPark has announced that Albert, a 26-year-old Asian elephant, has successfully completed treatment for tuberculosis (TB). This marks a notable achievement in veterinary healthcare, addressing the challenges of treating large animals with such diseases.

Albert's TB diagnosis came during routine health screenings in June 2023. Following this, a detailed treatment protocol was implemented, following high standards of veterinary care.

"Albert’s successful recovery from tuberculosis is a testament to the deep trust and cooperation he shares with his care team," said Calli Hamlin, assistant curator of elephants at the ABQ BioPark. "This outcome was possible because of our proactive health measures, including regular screenings of the entire herd."

During his treatment period, Albert displayed no symptoms of illness, highlighting the success of preventive care and early detection strategies. Other elephants in the herd tested negative for TB.

Treating TB in elephants is complex due to their size and slow metabolism which affects medication absorption and processing. The bacteria's resilience requires an extended antibiotic regimen lasting 12 to 18 months to ensure complete eradication.

The BioPark emphasizes rigorous health protocols for all animals' safety and wellbeing. They remain committed to high standards of care and aim to share this success globally to advance animal health management.

Gratitude was expressed towards the dedicated team and supportive community committed to the residents' wellbeing at the BioPark.
