The ABQ BioPark has announced a temporary relocation of many birds indoors as a precaution against Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). This decision follows the detection of HPAI in wild birds within Bernalillo County. Although no cases have been reported at the BioPark, the measure aims to reduce potential exposure risks.

The BioPark has contingency plans to safeguard its avian population during bird flu outbreaks and is currently implementing these strategies. The affected birds will return outdoors once protective covers are installed over their habitats.

Avian influenza, carried by wild birds, can spread easily and poses a significant threat to certain species. While all birds are susceptible, some are particularly vulnerable. The BioPark is committed to ensuring these species remain protected while maintaining a comfortable environment for them.

In addition, any deceased bird found at the BioPark will undergo testing for HPAI. The bird team is prepared to bring additional birds indoors if necessary. Though human contraction of avian influenza is rare, the BioPark advises against handling dead or sick birds in areas where HPAI has been confirmed.

For more information on HPAI's current status, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at https://www.cdc.gov/flu/avianflu/.
