UNM honors staff excellence with 2024 Gerald W. May Outstanding Staff Awards

The University of New Mexico recently honored the recipients of the 2024 Gerald W. May Outstanding Staff Award at a ceremony held in the Student Union Building. This award, established in 1990 by former UNM President Gerald W. May, acknowledges staff members who demonstrate dedication, creativity, and commitment to advancing the University's mission.

This year's winners are recognized for their leadership in innovation and collaboration:

Tuan Bui serves as associate director of Enterprise Applications Development in the IT Department. Bui has significantly contributed to technological advancements at UNM and played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic by developing software solutions for campus safety. He has received a Louie Award for his contributions and is known for mentoring his team.

Sharina Desai is the technical director at the Autophagy, Inflammation, and Metabolism Core Facility within the School of Medicine’s Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. Desai is noted for her scientific expertise and mentorship, promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, sustainability, and well-being on campus.

Deena Duran works as a senior business analyst at UNM Health Sciences. She focuses on improving efficiency through projects that enhance administrative processes. Outside work, she enjoys visiting museums with her family.

Jason Quinn is field and studio engineering manager at New Mexico PBS. Under his leadership, New Mexico PBS became a pioneer in broadcast technology by implementing NEXTGENTV. Quinn volunteers with the UNM Staff Council and Society of Broadcast Engineers.

Additional nominees for 2025 included Arturo Benavidez from Biology Sevilleta Field Station LTER; Beth Mercer from Project ECHO; Cecilia C Gutierrez from CPL; and D'Andre Q Curtis from Project ECHO - Education Department (STEM).

Staff members are nominated each fall by peers across the University community. Committees such as the Staff Council Rewards and Recognition Committee review these nominations before final selections are made by the University president. Winners receive a monetary award along with a plaque recognizing their service.
