The University of New Mexico (UNM) has launched a revamped platform known as the UNM Newsroom, designed to centralize and distribute information to students, faculty, alumni, and the wider community. This development is part of a broader effort by UNM’s communication teams to bolster the university’s reputation and maintain its status as New Mexico's flagship institution and only public health system.
The initiative emphasizes fostering a positive impression of the university, which is essential for attracting grants, funding, and enrolling students while retaining high-quality faculty and staff. The news site is part of UNM's objective to operate in a One University spirit, aligned with its 2040 goals. University Communications and Marketing (UCAM) and Health Sciences Center Marketing & Communications (MarCom) collaborated in this remodel.
"The UNM Newsroom incorporates content from the central campus and the HSC and keeps students, faculty, alumni, and the broader community, including various stakeholders, informed about the latest news and information while showcasing the many ways Lobos are making a positive impact," explained the communication team's platform announcement. The website's design is meant to provide easy navigation through categories such as Research, Campus Life, Patient Care, and Community Engagement.
The site features stories on academic and research achievements, innovative projects, faculty recognition, student successes, and health and wellness advice, often augmented by multimedia elements like photos and videos. According to the announcement, "The combined UNM Newsroom offers many standout features from its commitment to showcasing the university’s academic and research achievements to innovative projects, faculty recognition, student successes, and health and wellness advice."
The newsroom also emphasizes UNM’s community and cultural connections by highlighting how the university's research impacts local, regional, and global communities. The site provides pathways to various individual newsrooms representing UNM’s central and branch campuses and the Health Sciences, offering stories on student and faculty achievements.
"Additional news and insights about campus events, public lectures, health care services, and community outreach initiatives that helps to foster UNM’s connection between the university and its surrounding communities is also provided," the team stated. The newsroom ensures broad accessibility through social media integration, furthering UNM’s commitment to community engagement and transparency.
