The University of New Mexico (UNM) will commence construction of a new Police Department Headquarters on April 8 at the corner of Mesa Vista Rd. and University Blvd. The project, with a total cost of $17 million, is partially funded by the $9 million 2023 Institutional Bond. This initiative aims to alleviate the current space constraints of the department located in Hokona Hall.

Chief of Police Joseph Silva emphasized the facility’s anticipated impact on campus safety and operations. “The new police facility will enhance the University of New Mexico Police Department’s ability to serve, protect, and engage the campus community through improved resources, technology, and space for collaboration,” Silva stated. The building will host a new dispatch center, dedicated training areas, a public meeting room, and more.

In addition to improved operational facilities, the new headquarters will provide enhanced accessibility and private spaces for sensitive interviews. “This new facility will make it easier to locate the police department, ensuring better accessibility,” Silva mentioned. The changes are designed to enhance comfort for individuals with concerns.

Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration Teresa Costantinidis added, “This new headquarters is a reflection of UNM’s deep commitment to creating a welcoming and safe campus for everyone—students, faculty, and visitors alike.” The new construction aims to bolster the connection between the police department and the Lobo community, serving as more than just a building.

Silva reiterated the building's potential to foster community trust, saying, “We want people to feel a sense of safety, respect, and connection the moment they walk in – a space that reflects trust, transparency, and pride.” The project represents a promise of integrity and service to the community.
