The participatory budgeting initiative in Albuquerque's City Council District 6 has reached the voting phase. This phase was initiated with a Project Expo hosted at the International District Library on March 29, 2025. The Expo allowed District 6 project teams to present their proposals, hoping to win funding. As a part of the PBABQ pilot program, community members are empowered to decide the allocation of $1.5 million in public funds for projects driven by community input.
Voting remains open from March 29 to April 19, 2025, and includes nine projects selected from over 240 submissions. The development of these projects began in October 2024 through meetings and sessions with community members, aiming to meet the capital needs of District 6.
The proposed projects include "Transforming Vacant Land into Public Parklets" for $400,000, "First Responder Mural" costing $64,500, "One Stop Respite Station" estimated at $175,575, and "5 Blocks for Life" at a full $1.5 million. Additional projects focus on infrastructure improvements and facilities, such as a playground and public restrooms.
Councilor Nichole L. Rogers highlighted the initiative's significance, stating, "This is a unique opportunity for our community to directly shape the future of District 6. We encourage all eligible residents to participate and make their voices heard."
The Project Expo was organized in a science fair format, promoting interaction, questioning, and an understanding of Participatory Budgeting before residents cast their votes.
Eligibility to vote is extended to individuals aged 11 and over who reside, work, or attend school in District 6. Voters are provided with a unique code to access the ballot and select their top three projects. Further details and voting materials are accessible at www.pbabq.org in both English and Spanish.
For those who missed the Expo or seek more project information, visiting the PBABQ voting page is recommended. Voting is available until April 19, 2025, while interested community groups may request presentations through a Google Form provided by PBABQ.
