The University of New Mexico (UNM) is observing National Arab American Heritage Month (NAAHM) this April. The initiative recognizes the cultural contributions and achievements of Arab Americans. UNM's various departments and organizations are hosting events and providing resources to promote understanding and appreciation of Arab American heritage.

The International Studies Institute (ISI) at UNM acts as a central organization for the interdisciplinary undergraduate program in International Studies within the College of Arts and Sciences. Its role is to enhance understanding of global issues, especially those regions of strategic and economic interest to the U.S., offering a minor and major in International Studies and hosting the Contemporary Jewish Studies Lecture Series each semester.

For 2025, ISI is presenting the Middle East Lecture Series, featuring reputable scholars discussing pertinent Middle East topics. The lectures are scheduled through April 29, and more details can be found on the ISI lecture page.

UNM’s Department of Languages, Cultures, and Literatures offers a comprehensive Arabic Studies program. This program ranges from elementary to advanced courses, focusing on enhancing linguistic competence using culturally relevant contexts and cross-cultural comparisons. The courses provide students with necessary analytical skills for various political, social, religious, and cultural contexts from the Middle East, North Africa, and Arab diaspora communities globally.

The Language Learning Center (LLC) at UNM supports all language learning aspects, providing expertise, resources, and space for language classes. Courses offered, including Arabic, aim to foster a diverse inclusive environment for language acquisition.

The Asian American Pacific Islander Resource Center (AAPIRC) was established in the 2021-2022 academic year. It aims to create a sense of belonging for students of Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American heritage through culturally relevant programs and cultivating leadership within these communities.

The Global Education Office (GEO) facilitates international linkages, cultural exchange, and global diversity across the university. UNM is committed to promoting global awareness through various study, research, and internship programs abroad. More information on these opportunities is available on the UNM Study Abroad portal.

National Arab American Heritage Month is formally recognized by the Arab America Foundation, acknowledging Arab Americans' achievements. Initiated in 2017, it has grown to include special events celebrating the community's heritage and contributions.

UNM encourages students, faculty, staff, and the broader community to engage in NAAHM events and resources to enhance understanding and appreciation of Arab American contributions.
