The University of New Mexico (UNM) has unveiled its first Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory in a decade, marking a significant step in its commitment to environmental sustainability. This inventory serves as an initial measurement tool for developing a five-year UNM environmental sustainability plan, part of the UNM 2040 initiative focusing on Goal 4: Sustainability.

The data from the GHG Inventory highlights progress in reducing emissions and provides baseline information for future climate action. Since Fiscal Year 2006, UNM’s Main Campus has achieved an 11% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions despite increased building square footage. When measured by emissions per square foot, the campus saw a 25% reduction, thanks to energy efficiency measures and LEED-certified building standards. The largest source of emissions is attributed to boilers and cogeneration units at the Ford Utilities Center.

Anne Jakle, UNM’s director of Sustainability, stated, “This inventory gives us an understanding of where we stand and areas where we can have the most impact in reducing carbon emissions.” She emphasized that this inventory and other baseline data are foundational tools for setting sustainability targets and making informed decisions about priorities.

The GHG inventory was conducted following input from various campus groups including the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico (ASUNM), Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA), UNM Faculty Senate, and UNM Staff Council. These groups have advocated for increased sustainability efforts at UNM.

Feleecia Guillen, director of Environmental Affairs for ASUNM, noted that “the greenhouse gas inventory at UNM is more than a measure of emissions—it’s a critical step toward environmental justice.”

In addition to the Office of Sustainability, entities such as Lobo Energy Inc. and UNM Utility Services were integral partners in compiling the necessary data for this inventory.

As part of broader efforts towards sustainability at UNM, plans include obtaining a Sustainability Tracking and Assessment Rating System (STARS) designation over the next year. The newly formed Office of Sustainability will engage with campus stakeholders through interviews, focus groups, surveys, public meetings, and steering committee sessions to guide strategic planning.

Teresa Costantinidis, executive vice president for Finance and Administration at UNM said that “universities like UNM are at the forefront of creating sustainable futures.” She highlighted how this commitment reinforces financial stewardship while promoting community well-being.

The full GHG Inventory is available on the Office of Sustainability website. Campus members are encouraged to review it and participate in discussions on sustainability strategic planning.

Jakle added that “this is just the first step in assessing UNM’s sustainability achievements and gaps,” expressing optimism about creating a more sustainable university through collaboration among all stakeholders.
