Today, a ceremony was held to honor Genevieve "Genny" Barrera by dedicating the Concession Area at North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center in her memory. The event was attended by Mayor Tim Keller and representatives from the Department of Senior Affairs as part of the ABQ Stories of Us initiative.
Mayor Tim Keller remarked, "Genny embodied the resilient spirit of our community through her kindness, strength, and the joy she brought to everyone at the center. With this dedication, we celebrate her contributions to our community, and her enduring legacy of selflessness."
Genevieve Barrera volunteered for nine years at the center despite facing challenges with Prader-Willi Syndrome. Her efforts were particularly noted in the Concession Area where she was known for her positive demeanor and willingness to help others.
Anna Sanchez, Director of Senior Affairs, stated, "Genny was more than a volunteer; she was a cherished part of the North Domingo Baca family. This dedication is a celebration of her life and a lasting tribute to her remarkable ability to connect and uplift those around her."
The ABQ Stories of Us initiative aims to honor individuals who have made significant impacts on Albuquerque's cultural and social landscape. Suggestions for renaming public spaces can be submitted via email.
