The South Broadway Cultural Center is set to host its 29th annual exhibition celebrating the first apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The event opens with an artist reception on December 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the center's gallery.
"Preserving these cultural traditions helps Albuquerque families stay connected to both history and heritage," stated Mayor Tim Keller. "It keeps these important stories alive in a vibrant, meaningful way."
Since 1924, the South Broadway community has gathered to commemorate this significant historical event that took place on the hill of Tepeyac in Mexico in 1531. The exhibition has become a cherished tradition, promoting unity and cultural richness within the community.
A key feature of this year's exhibition is the community altar created by Los Guadalupanos. It offers a unique perspective on the annual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The altar acts as a focal point for reflection and reverence, inviting visitors to connect with the cultural and spiritual significance of the event.
The exhibition will run until December 28, with gallery hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
This year also marks the centennial anniversary of the community's Guadalupe procession, which will start after the 10 a.m. mass at St. Francis Xavier Church on December 15.
