The ABQ BioPark Zoo is anticipating the birth of a new elephant calf as part of its growing herd. Rozie, an Asian elephant, is expected to give birth in December. The pregnancy could be the result of natural breeding or artificial insemination conducted in February 2023. DNA testing will determine the paternity after the calf's arrival.

Volunteers are conducting remote monitoring to avoid disturbing the herd while ensuring Rozie's health. They work in shifts around the clock, observing specific behaviors that may indicate labor has begun. The data collected will contribute to research and animal welfare through Zoo Monitor, a program utilized by the ABQ BioPark.

The zoo staff has been preparing Rozie for her upcoming delivery with specialized training and a diet tailored to her needs. Amber Alink, curator of elephants and primates at the zoo, noted that bok choy is Rozie's "pregnancy craving." Exercise routines have been adjusted as she progresses through her pregnancy stages.

In 2018, a dedicated birthing arena was constructed for such events, allowing for herd births and providing nighttime living space. This setup will enable Alice, Rozie's mother, to be present during the birthing process.

The BioPark employs a method of herd birthing that minimizes human intervention unless necessary for safety reasons. Alink stated: “Rozie is an experienced mother,” adding confidence in both Rozie and the care team based on past successful births.

Training includes recall exercises for safety and teaching Rozie to bring items to staff so they can safely inspect her calf post-birth. As Asian elephants face threats from habitat loss, every individual birth is crucial for species survival. The BioPark's designation as an Elephant Breeding Facility underlines its commitment to this cause.
