The ABQ BioPark Zoo has been honored by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) with an Exhibit Award for its Asia habitat expansion. This award recognizes excellence in live animal display and exhibit design, highlighting the BioPark's efforts in promoting animal welfare and conservation education.

Opened on October 5, 2023, the 4.5-acre Asia habitat was a $35 million project funded by Albuquerque’s 1/8-cent Gross Receipts Tax (GRT). It introduced new standards for animal care at the BioPark with its rotational “flex” habitats that allow species such as snow leopards, Malayan tigers, orangutans, and Steller’s sea eagles to engage in natural behaviors. The space features diverse environments including forests, mountains, and coastlines.

Mayor Tim Keller commented on the achievement stating, “The Asia habitat is a high mark for our zoo, and for our community.” He added that they will continue investing in experiences benefiting Albuquerque families while supporting global conservation efforts.

The design of the Asia habitats emphasizes animal wellbeing through dynamic environments that encourage natural behaviors. Features like sway poles have increased climbing activities among orangutans and siamangs.

Dan Ashe, president and CEO of AZA said, “Congratulations to the team at the ABQ BioPark for their hard work and dedication in achieving this remarkable recognition.” He noted that this award celebrates top achievements within the global zoological community.

The "flex" habitats are among the first successful predator-prey rotational habitats in the nation. They offer animals shared spaces at different times which provide unique enrichment opportunities.

BioPark Associate Director Lynn Tupa expressed pride in receiving the AZA Exhibit Award saying it highlights their commitment to enriching environments for animals while providing educational experiences for visitors.

Beyond enhancing animal care, Asia aims to educate guests on conservation topics like wildlife trafficking and biodiversity through programs like BioPark Connections.

This expansion was made possible by voter-approved GRT funding along with contributions from community partners such as PNC Bank, New Mexico Gas Company, and the PNM Foundation. The New Mexico BioPark Society thanked these supporters who helped bring Asia to fruition at the BioPark.
