As the colder months approach, the University of New Mexico Hospital is taking steps to support the homeless population in New Mexico. On October 15, 2024, UNM Hospital will host a blanket giveaway and resource fair aimed at assisting community groups that aid those experiencing homelessness.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 933 Bradbury Drive SE, featuring participation from over 40 community partners. The hospital's Community Engagement Department has secured 8,000 emergency blankets for distribution during this initiative.
Sally Acosta, MBA, Community Engagement Liaison at UNM Hospital, remarked on the growing attendance: "This event has doubled in attendance which, in a way, is a double-edged sword. That just means there is a need for these types of resources. It's exciting that we get to interface with additional partners that we've never met before but, at the same time, it just speaks to the ever-growing demands folks are facing out in the community."
In addition to distributing blankets, various departments within UNM Hospital will provide information about their services. These include Behavioral Health Services and other departments such as Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinical Services and Emergency Department Services. The New Mexico Harm Reduction Collaborative will also be present to distribute Narcan (Naloxone), an opioid overdose reversal medication.
Acosta emphasized UNM Hospital's commitment: “UNM Hospital takes its responsibility to care for the community to heart. It is not something that should be overlooked.”
The community is encouraged to support efforts for the unhoused by donating to organizations like APS McKinney Vento or Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless. Those needing assistance can reach out to Albuquerque Community Safety.
