The University of New Mexico (UNM) is progressing in its search for a new Vice President and Director of Athletics. This recruitment follows the departure of Eddie Nuñez on August 17, 2024, with David Williams stepping in as Interim Vice President and Director of Athletics on August 21.

UNM President Garnett S. Stokes highlighted the significance of this role: "The Vice President and Director of Athletics plays a crucial role in advancing our university's mission and values through athletics. We are seeking a visionary leader who can build upon our recent successes and guide Lobo Athletics to new heights."

To assist with the search, UNM has enlisted Parker Executive Search, a firm known for its expertise in higher education and athletics leadership placements. The position description details key responsibilities such as overseeing NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic programs, aligning with UNM's strategic goals, managing financial operations, ensuring compliance with regulations, and fostering community relationships.

Parker Executive Search has engaged various constituent groups through virtual and in-person meetings to inform the search process. The recruitment phase is now active, with a candidate pool being developed for committee review before making a recommendation to President Stokes.

UNM Athletics has seen significant achievements recently, including 53 NCAA tournament appearances and 22 Mountain West titles. The new leader will be tasked with building on these successes while addressing challenges like program competitiveness and financial commitments.

President Stokes urged community involvement in suggesting candidates: “The impact of this position extends beyond athletics,” she said. “It enhances our university's reputation, engages the community, and contributes to the overall student experience.” Nominations can be submitted via the Candidate Nomination Link on the UNM Executive Search website.

Del Archuleta chairs the search committee comprising university leaders, faculty, alumni, and community representatives responsible for reviewing applications and conducting interviews. The aim is to appoint a new Vice President by early 2025. Interested candidates should submit their applications to Parker Executive Search by October 25, 2024.
