The City of Albuquerque’s Department of Senior Affairs held its annual AmeriCorps Seniors Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Appreciation Breakfast and Award Ceremony today. Sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, the event honored volunteers aged 55 and over who support various nonprofit, government, and community organizations in the city.
“The impact these folks have is real, it matters, and it’s why volunteerism and service are an essential part of what makes Albuquerque special,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “They enrich peoples’ lives and create a positive ripple effect throughout our community, reminding us that we all have the power to transform, to rejuvenate, and to create a better city for all our families.”
The ceremony highlighted the contributions of RSVP volunteers in categories such as Volunteer Stations of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and the Lifetime Achievement Award. These awards were given to individuals and organizations demonstrating exceptional service and dedication.
This year, Barelas Senior Center and Popejoy Hall were named Volunteer Stations of the Year for contributing over 7,000 hours of service combined. Patrick Sena received the Volunteer of the Year award for contributing over 800 hours at multiple sites. The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Gloria Borton for her decade-long volunteer work at Bear Canyon Senior Center.
“Our AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers put so much heart and effort into everything that they do,” said Anna Sanchez, Director of Senior Affairs. “Their commitment to service is truly inspiring, and we are lucky to have so many talented older adults helping to make our city a better place.”
The AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP Program places older adults in meaningful volunteer roles, allowing them to stay active while making a difference in the community. For more information, visit cabq.gov/seniors/senior-volunteer or call 505-764-6400.
