We are continuing to work a large outside brush fire in the Carnuel area adjacent to I-40. The Route 66 Fire started at 4:54pm in the arroyo on the North side of the freeway. The fire spread rapidly due to windy conditions and jumped the freeway resulting in numerous spot fires. The approximate acreage burned is 16 at this time. Although some structures were threatened by the flames, we have no reported losses of structures at this time. We have asked residents to evacuate their homes on the south side of the freeway in the area as a precautionary measure while we continue working on the fire. Both I-40 and Route 66 were closed due to close proximity to the fire, a downed power line across the freeway, and direct fire suppression operations being performed from the roadways. We have recently opened one lane of Route 66 in both directions, and ask that drivers yield to emergency vehicles where necessary.
