Bernalillo County – Bernalillo County, the City of Albuquerque, the Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority (AMAFCA), and members of the Illegal Dumping Partnership (IDP), are joining together to address illegal dumping on private and public open spaces. This entails a multifaceted effort to include increased patrolling, enforcement, community outreach, and education.
The illegal dumping taking place comes from a combination of residents and businesses. Items dumped are made up of construction material, bulky items and large appliances, which turns into a public health issue, a public safety issue and an environmental issue.
This initiative will begin with Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Albuquerque Police Department officers conducting extra patrols on the Southwest Mesa beginning on Friday, June 3, to try to stop illegal dumping before it happens. They will also make sure that loads are properly covered to prevent trash from falling out of the back of vehicles when in transit.
Partners of the IDP will be working collaboratively with area neighborhood associations to educate the public on proper disposal of items. A community cleanup will also take place at two sites on the West Side on Saturday, June 11, to deter illegal dumping by providing an opportunity for residents to dispose of items properly. Details for the cleanup will be shared with area neighborhood associations in the coming days.
“This project is a saturation effort focused around engaging residents about cleanup, enforcement and education about the problem of illegal dumping,” says IDP Chair Lucas Tafoya. “We will be working with neighborhood associations to make them aware of the huge problem that illegal dumping has become in our community.
