The ABQ BioPark has officially reopened its Heritage Farm, unveiling major renovations that focus on sustainability and community interaction. The reopening was timed to coincide with Earth Day, highlighting the BioPark’s commitment to environmental initiatives.

The $14 million renovation, funded by a 1/8-cent gross receipts tax sanctioned by Albuquerque voters, aimed to enhance the farm's purpose while minimizing maintenance and promoting an eco-friendly environment. The project started in Spring 2023, and the farm now offers an enriching experience for both visitors and animals.

Mayor Tim Keller commented on the reopening: “Heritage Farm is where Albuquerque’s roots come to life. This renovation connects families with our agricultural history in a hands-on way, giving everyone the chance to experience farming, nature, and the food we love.”

Significant enhancements include expansion of the crop gardens to five times their previous size. The gardens now feature a variety of leafy greens, perennial beds for crops like asparagus and raspberries, and a fairy garden with medicinal plants and pollinator-friendly flowers. A container garden has been introduced to educate visitors on home gardening, regardless of space limitations.

To support these changes, several 3,000-gallon rainwater collection tanks have been installed, ensuring effective supplemental watering and underscoring the BioPark’s sustainable practices.

Matthew Peterson, BioPark Associate Director, stated, “This renovation brings a modern and meaningful approach to what a working farm can be while maintaining the integrity and historical legacy of traditional heritage farming in New Mexico. It’s a space that connects people to food, nature, and animals in a hands-on, inspiring way.”

New animal residents have made the farm their home, including Highland cattle, miniature donkeys, and Nigerian dwarf goats. The flock of chickens features four new breeds. Returning animals include favorites like Bugz the painted horse and Navajo-Churro sheep. These animals now enjoy upgraded facilities and expanded pastures that enhance their wellbeing.

The guest experience has been improved with updates to the historic cider barn, new outdoor education spaces for children, a nature engagement area, paved sidewalks, and additional parking.
