On April 10, 2025, Texas Tech Health El Paso hosted Nusenda Sun City Smiles Day, an event designed to improve the oral health of children while providing a positive experience aimed at reducing dental anxiety. More than 120 children from the Ysleta Independent School District participated, receiving no-cost dental services and oral health education. The services were administered by dental students at the Texas Tech Dental Oral Health Clinic, with oversight from faculty.
The event was sponsored by the Nusenda Foundation, which provided a $15,000 grant through its Community Rewards Program for 2024-2025. Rebecca Isaacs, assistant vice president of community relations for Nusenda Credit Union, remarked on its significance: “We’re so happy to be here supporting Sun City Smiles Day... It’s all about giving back to the community because our children are the future, and we’re proud to support both their health and the students at Texas Tech Health El Paso who are gaining valuable hands-on experience.”
Richard Black, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the Hunt School of Dental Medicine, emphasized the importance of the event: “These smile days are so important for our community. They give children who may not have consistent access to dental care a chance to be examined, referred if needed, and learn about dental hygiene.”
The children engaged in activities that emphasized proper brushing techniques, identifying sugars in snacks, and healthy eating. Kelly Yang, a third-year dental student, explained the broader aim: "That’s why it’s so important to give children a positive experience early on... Events like this one help us educate, treat and inspire future generations while working together as dental students across all four years classes to serve our community."
Oral health continues to be a significant issue in underserved areas of west Texas. Community partnerships, such as this one, underscore Texas Tech Health El Paso's commitment to addressing these challenges.
The Nusenda Foundation, established in 2015 as the nonprofit arm of Nusenda Credit Union, is new to the El Paso area and aims to impact education, health, and community well-being.
Texas Tech Health El Paso, which serves 108 rural counties in West Texas, is focused on health care education and will include dental graduates starting in 2025. The institution is dedicated to preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals.
