Bernalillo County has initiated a pioneering pre-apprenticeship program at West Mesa High School, developed in collaboration with the ABC Community School Partnership, Local 412 Plumbers and Pipefitters, and the Outreach and Education Foundation. The initiative is designed to open new career paths for students by providing real-world experience in the construction trades.

This program is particularly notable for bringing together county government, a public school, a registered apprenticeship program, and a local union. The aim is to enhance career technical education and broaden access to work-based learning opportunities.

The project was spearheaded by District 1 Bernalillo County Commissioner Barbara Baca and state Representative Joy Garratt from Albuquerque. Both have been advocates for innovative approaches that bolster career technical education and prepare students for future roles in skilled trades.

Students participating in the program will gain hands-on training and receive mentorship from industry professionals. They will have the opportunity to explore careers that are in high demand. This experience serves as a stepping stone for students, potentially leading directly into apprenticeship programs or the workforce upon graduation.

As the first group of students embarks on their training, Bernalillo County and its partners emphasize their ongoing commitment to creating robust educational pathways. Their goal is to support young people, strengthen families, and contribute to the regional economy's growth.
