Bernalillo County Emergency Communications has been designated as the testing ground for New Mexico's new Next Generation 911 (NG911) technology. This system aims to improve the precision of information used in locating and responding to emergencies by utilizing a digital, internet protocol-based platform. Traditional call-routing, which depends on cell towers or landline connections, will be replaced by this advanced system.
NG911 promises enhanced response capabilities by allowing transmission of image-related data, such as photos, video, and surveillance footage, which will enable responders to gain a better understanding of the situation before arriving at the scene. A public education campaign is planned for later this year to inform residents about the specifics of the new technology before it is fully implemented.
Robbie McCormick, the Emergency Communications Director, stated, “Our center is the first in New Mexico to have this capability. We are excited for the opportunity to play a key role in assisting other call centers with their transitions.”
The selection of Bernalillo County Emergency Communications was made by the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration NM-911 Bureau along with Motorola Next Generation Core Services. The NG911 system is expected to be operational by August, with all emergency communication centers in New Mexico transitioning to the new platform.
