Bernalillo County, New Mexico, is preparing for potential service changes as Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) considers implementing a Public Safety Power Shutoff in the East Mountains on Thursday, April 17. This measure, intended to reduce wildfire risk amid extreme weather conditions, has not yet been decided by PNM.

If enacted, non-emergency services provided by Bernalillo County, including programs at the East Mountain BernCo Community Centers, may experience adjustments or closures. "PNM will communicate directly with potentially affected customers if the decision to implement a power shutoff is made," said a PNM spokesperson.

Several Bernalillo County facilities will close if the power shutoff goes ahead. Parents and guardians are advised to arrange alternative care for children attending after-school programs at these locations.

PNM has also increased the sensitivity of its system to disruptions caused by vegetation and debris. This may result in longer restoration times during outages, as the need for manual inspections will require more time for safe resolution. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates and prepare for possible service interruptions.
