Bernalillo County Open Space along with the ABQ Backyard Refuge Program is hosting a special event called Backyard Refuge Day. The event will be held at the Gutiérrez-Hubbell House on Saturday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is designed to honor local conservation efforts while providing practical insights into creating spaces at home that are friendly to wildlife.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in guided walks, educational workshops, and various interactive activities aimed at children. The Conservation Carnivale—a mobile circus that combines environmental education with visual, immersive, and performance arts—will also be a part of the event. Additionally, attendees can enjoy complimentary plants and paletas from Pop Fizz while supplies last.

The event is set to feature a range of tours and workshops covering topics such as edible and medicinal weeds, rainwater harvesting at home, local bird species, native plant life, and agricultural field studies. Numerous local conservation partners will be on hand to discuss how community members can support wildlife and people in both urban and rural settings.

The ABQ Backyard Refuge Program is focused on fostering habitats for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife within urban environments to ensure their survival alongside human populations. By engaging in wildlife gardening, residents are encouraged to enhance their outdoor areas, whether they have a sizable backyard, a modest garden, or simply a balcony, through the introduction of native plant species and vital resources for wildlife.
