The University of New Mexico's Lobo Battalion has been named the Best Small Program in its brigade at the Senior Leader Workshop held in San Antonio, Texas. This annual award assesses programs based on cadet performance at camp, retention, recruiting, and overall culture. The Lobo Battalion stood out among 34 competing programs, demonstrating that success is not determined by size.

Lt. Col. William Cunningham, professor of military science for the Army ROTC, highlighted the dedication of the cadets as a key factor in receiving this recognition. "This award is about the cadets more than anything," Cunningham stated. "They’ve embraced the leadership skills we teach, constantly push themselves to improve, and actively support each other."

This achievement marks the third time UNM's battalion has received this honor, with previous wins in 2015 and 2017. David Weiss, dean of University College overseeing UNM’s ROTC programs, expressed his pride: “I’m thrilled—and not at all surprised—that the Lobo Battalion was recognized with this prestigious award."

Sergeant First Class Kevin Stanger also emphasized the broader significance of this recognition for their cadets' future influence beyond UNM: “This isn’t just about our program—it’s about our cadets and the influence they’ll have beyond UNM.”

With another accolade secured, the Lobo Battalion continues to exemplify leadership development and training excellence within its ranks.

“The Army ROTC program always makes UNM proud—and this award gives all Lobos one more thing to take pride in,” Weiss added.
