The University of New Mexico-Gallup has opened the Legacy Gallery, a new space showcasing historic photographs that document the experiences of African Americans in New Mexico. The gallery was launched on February 13 through a collaboration between UNM-Gallup’s Zollinger Library and the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
Zollinger Library Director Markos Chavez emphasized the importance of honoring both the photos and the mission of the campus with this new space. "This space also represents what libraries seek to do, which is to bridge gaps of information, promote ideas, and promote cultures," Chavez said.
LD Lovett, Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, explained that the gallery aims to foster conversation and idea exchange among diverse groups. "What I hope would happens at this point is that all during the year, this gallery would be open," Lovett stated. He added that it should serve as a resource for teaching American history throughout the year.
The collection on display originates from Shiame Okunor, a retired UNM professor who loaned his photo collection to UNM-Gallup. Previously stored in a library basement except for special events, these images now have a permanent home thanks to efforts by Chavez and his team.
Chavez noted that many people are unaware of this aspect of New Mexico's history: "Behind me is a collection of photographs that help show a history and culture in our great state."
Despite its comprehensive scope across New Mexico, Gallup community organizer Mona Frazier pointed out that local representation is lacking in the current exhibit. Frazier shared her ongoing research into Gallup's Black history during the grand opening event.
In conjunction with Black History Month celebrations on campus, UNM-Gallup hosted various activities including an event titled Jazz & Vintage Typewriters Experience earlier on February 13. Additional events include guest presentations by UNM-Valencia Chancellor Samuel Dosumu and panel discussions featuring notable speakers such as Alfred Dennis Mathewson and Harun Williams.
More information about upcoming events will be available on the UNM-Gallup Events Calendar website.
