Over 150 local business and community leaders gathered to hear Mayor Tim Keller discuss Albuquerque's progress on long-term projects and challenges. Speaking at the Economic Forum of Albuquerque on January 8, Keller highlighted significant strides in addressing issues like homelessness, crime, housing, and economic development.

Mayor Keller noted that comprehensive services for substance abuse, mental health, and homelessness are being established for the first time in the city's history. "Ten years ago, the City took care of about 200 people just at night and just during the winter," he said. "Last night, we had 1,000 people that we were sheltering out of the cold."

The city is also making advancements in housing through modernized zoning and streamlined processes. Since 2018, over 2,500 new housing units have been built. In total, 4,000 units have been constructed in the last decade.

In terms of crime reduction, investments in technology and civilian support have shown positive results. "We have transformed the Albuquerque Police Department doing two things; we’re using technology and we’re using civilians to help fight crime," stated Mayor Keller.

Albuquerque's economic strategy now focuses on attracting both large companies and supporting small to medium-sized businesses. The city has added 5,000 jobs across roughly 500 businesses with ongoing infrastructure investments.

"The story of our city is one of two truths," said Mayor Keller. "It's a truth of deep challenge... but it's also a story of massive generational change that is happening right now."

The city aims to enhance residents' quality of life by modernizing parks and community centers while promoting sports tourism and educational initiatives.
