Preventing overdoses from fentanyl and other synthetic opioids is a key focus of the ongoing keepNMalive initiative in Bernalillo County. This communications outreach emphasizes harm reduction through tools like drug testing strips and naloxone, as shared by three New Mexicans: a mother who lost her son to a fentanyl overdose, a woman who overcame opioid abuse and used naloxone to save a life, and a public health expert advocating for drug checking tools. Their stories appear in TV commercials, billboards, and signs across Bernalillo County, promoting the message that harm reduction can save lives by providing people with necessary tools and knowledge.

The campaign is part of the KeepNMalive initiative, which involves collaboration among Bernalillo County, the City of Albuquerque, various governmental entities at local, state, and federal levels, treatment providers, law enforcement agencies, community members, and Vital Strategies—a nonprofit global health organization. Vital Strategies supported the development of harm reduction materials for keepNMalive.
