The city of Albuquerque has taken decisive action to close the Loma Verde Motel on Central Avenue, citing numerous safety violations and criminal activity. The closure follows an inspection that revealed significant risks to tenants and the surrounding community. In 2024 alone, the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) and Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) responded to over 150 calls at the motel, including two homicides.

Mayor Tim Keller stated, "We will not tolerate businesses that turn a blind eye or willingly engage in criminal activity in this city. Today, we’re sending a clear message: If you put lives at risk, we will take decisive action to hold you accountable."

The inspection uncovered several violations at Loma Verde Motel such as exposed wiring, inadequate heating, fire hazards like missing smoke detectors and blocked exits, hazardous plumbing issues, structural disrepair including water damage and roach infestations, and drug paraphernalia scattered across the property.

The motel housed elderly residents and families who were paying between $896 and $1,300 monthly for unsafe living conditions. Many units lacked essential safety features.

Planning Department Director Alan Varela emphasized the city's commitment to public safety: "Public safety remains our top priority. We must continue to take swift action against problematic properties that threaten the wellbeing of our community."

To assist displaced tenants, Albuquerque Community Safety (ACS) has facilitated their relocation to safer accommodations and is providing ongoing support for stable housing solutions. Companion animals found at the motel are under protective custody by Animal Welfare until owners reclaim them in compliance with local ordinances.
