Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, elves, and the Grinch visited The University of New Mexico Hospital to spread holiday cheer among patients and families who are unable to celebrate at home this year. Despite his busy schedule, Santa made time on Thursday morning to deliver toys and smiles at UNM Children’s Hospital.
Santa arrived by helicopter courtesy of UNM Hospital Lifeguard for his first stop at UNM Hospital Child Life, followed by a visit to UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center (SRMC). Ana Bacon, Director of Child Life, emphasized the importance of bringing the holidays to the hospital each year for families who can't leave.
“We just have to make sure that our kids are not forgotten,” said Bacon. “Santa will be here to help celebrate with them and help normalize what’s going on here in the hospital.”
Joseph Morales played the role of the Grinch during these visits. His son Harlan has been treated for acute myeloid leukemia at UNM Children’s Hospital. Dressed as the Grinch, Morales aimed to bring joy and laughter to other families spending Christmas in the hospital.
“Christmas has always been a big tradition for us,” said Morales. “My family is going to have to spend Christmas here, so we just wanted to spread a little joy.”
The event was well-received by patients, their families, and hospital staff. Morales highlighted the tight-knit community within the hospital environment where everyone is familiar with one another.
Before leaving for the North Pole, Mr. and Mrs. Claus also visited SRMC patients and employees across all floors. Jamie Silva-Steele, President of SRMC, expressed appreciation for Santa's annual visit: “We look forward to Santa’s visit every year at SRMC! He brings so much joy.”
The visit marked a joyful occasion during this holiday season.
