Thousands of people contributed to making 2024 a landmark year for the Los Altos Softball Complex in Albuquerque. The newly renovated facility at Los Altos Park hosted a record number of 27 softball tournaments, involving 765 teams. Nearly three-quarters of these events featured teams from out-of-state, and approximately one-third of all participating teams were from outside Albuquerque, boosting the city's sports tourism economy.
“Albuquerque is a premier destination for sports tourism and a great place for local families to enjoy top notch facilities,” stated Mayor Tim Keller. He added that the influx of visitors enhances the local economy while showcasing Albuquerque's venues and hospitality.
Terry Hennessy, CEO of Senior Softball USA (SSUSA), praised the new complex: “The new 5-field Los Altos Softball Complex – which became the beautiful home of the 2024 Land of Enchantment Champions this past June – is by far one of the best facilities we use.”
The largest events included April's Gathering of Nations tournament and SSUSA’s tournament in June, collectively attracting 2,200 players and 147 teams. Impressed with their experience, SSUSA plans to return in 2025 with more teams. Additionally, they awarded Los Altos Park as "Softball Complex of the Year" for 2024. During Hispanic Heritage Month, the city launched its inaugural “Camino Real Hispanic Heritage Tournament,” aiming to grow it into a significant regional event.
This year marked the first full season since Los Altos Park reopened in July 2023 after renovations. With five new fields, it can host larger tournaments and welcome more visitors from outside Albuquerque.
“As predicted, the Los Altos Softball Complex has been an instant success,” said Dave Simon, Director of Parks & Recreation Department. “Investing in sports and recreation facilities is investing in Albuquerque’s future and we are excited to build on this momentum.”
For 2025, seven tournaments are already scheduled at Los Altos with more being planned. Those interested in organizing events can contact the Sports Office at Parks & Recreation Department via phone at 505-224-6682.
