Today, 763 Thanksgiving meals were distributed across the Gateway Network in Albuquerque. At Gateway West, 32 volunteers provided 603 meals to homeless individuals. Additionally, 26 volunteers served 115 meals to families at Gateway Family and 45 women at the Housing Navigation Center.
Mayor Tim Keller expressed gratitude for the community's efforts: “Today, I am thankful for our community coming together to help those in need,” he said. “I appreciate the volunteers, restaurants, and staff who are making a difference by serving a special holiday meal and putting smiles on the faces of families and children who are on the path to housing.”
Donations played a crucial role in this initiative. Baca Boys Café contributed three gallons of red chile gravy. Alex Tackman and Billy Tubb from RKL Sales donated 50 pumpkin pies, while Labatt Food Service added another 20 pies. Marie Chavez and Patti Smith supplied cases of whipped cream.
Gilbert Ramirez, Health, Housing and Homelessness Director, acknowledged the support: “Individuals and families seeking pathways to housing already have a lot on their plate, and because of the hard work of our staff and volunteers, today families didn’t have to worry about a warm Thanksgiving meal.” He thanked everyone for supporting vulnerable community members throughout the year.
Maria Wolfe, Homeless Innovations Officer, also appreciated volunteer efforts: “We are thankful for the volunteers who shared their holiday with people who need it the most,” she stated. She highlighted Thanksgiving as a time when people come together to make it special for shelter residents.
Opportunities remain available for volunteering during the holiday season through cabq.gov/hhh/volunteer.
