The Albuquerque Museum has renamed its lobby to honor former Mayor Jim Baca. The dedication is part of the Keller administration's ABQ Stories of Us initiative, which recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed to the city's history and improved the lives of its residents.
"Among his many accomplishments, Mayor Baca played a pivotal role in making the Albuquerque Museum what it is today," stated Mayor Tim Keller. "His vision and advocacy helped it become a leading art and history institution in the Southwest, a place where all families can connect to our city’s rich heritage."
The newly named Jim Baca Lobby celebrates Baca's lifelong commitment to public service and his dedication to Albuquerque and New Mexico. Born on September 6, 1945, Baca served as New Mexico’s Commissioner of Public Lands twice and was appointed Director of the Bureau of Land Management under President Bill Clinton in 1993.
As mayor from 1997 to 2001, Baca was instrumental in expanding the Albuquerque Museum. His efforts led to a new exhibition gallery, a multi-purpose space for public programs, and enhancements like a café and store within the museum.
Following his public service career, Baca continued his environmental advocacy as New Mexico’s Natural Resources Trustee until retiring in 2009.
