The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) has recently announced the establishment of a new chapter at The University of New Mexico, housed within the Department of Communication & Journalism. This move opens up opportunities for students to gain practical experience and apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings.
Steve Carr, APR, Director of Communication and Professional Advisor at UNM, expressed enthusiasm about the new chapter. "The University of New Mexico is excited about a PRSSA chapter in the Communication and Journalism Department and the benefits it will provide students in terms of real-world experience in the field of public relations," he said. Carr highlighted various benefits such as events, networking, campaign development with real clients, scholarships, and internships.
Dr. Ilia Rodríguez Nazario, an associate professor and department advisor for UNM PRSSA, emphasized how PRSSA activities complement the existing curriculum. “PRSSA activities complement the curriculum to enrich the learning experience of students and improve the quality of their academic work,” she stated. Rodríguez Nazario also noted that this addition aligns with a longstanding tradition within UNM's Department of Communication & Journalism.
Rodríguez Nazario further acknowledged student involvement as critical to fulfilling the department's mission: “Since the late 1940s, the Department of Communication & Journalism at The University of New Mexico has successfully trained generations of professionals whose leadership in all communication functions and industries has made a difference in the state of New Mexico.”
UNM PRSSA President Teresa Parraz described this development as an exciting opportunity for students interested in communications and public relations. “It opens the door for them to connect with professionals both locally and nationally,” she said. Parraz aims to foster an inclusive environment where students can grow professionally and personally through workshops, mentorships, industry events, national conferences, scholarships, and internships.
Parraz shared her vision for UNM PRSSA: “Ultimately, my vision is for UNM PRSSA to become a long-lasting resource that continuously evolves to meet the needs of future students.” She encouraged interested individuals from across campus to join or learn more by accessing their UNM Involve account or contacting her directly via email.
For additional information about PRSSA's offerings nationwide or other inquiries related to membership at UNM’s chapter specifically can be directed through their official website or direct contact with Parraz.
