The City of Albuquerque has introduced a new initiative, "Park & Chill Sundays," aimed at providing a designated space for the city's lowrider community and car enthusiasts. This pilot program was announced by Mayor Tim Keller, Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency Director Terry Brunner, District 2 Councilor Joaquín Baca, and District 3 Councilor Klarissa Peña.

"Albuquerque’s lowrider culture is deeply woven into the fabric of our city, and Park & Chill Sundays gives us a chance to celebrate it in a way that unites our community,” stated Mayor Tim Keller. He emphasized the program's role in bringing families and friends together safely in downtown Albuquerque.

The event will occur every Sunday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, starting November 10, 2024, and continuing through February. The designated location for this gathering is the parking lot between 6th & 7th St, north of Central Avenue.

Terry Brunner highlighted the program as an example of supporting Albuquerque’s cultural identity. “We want our downtown to reflect the spirit of our community and celebrate Albuquerque’s traditions," he said.

District 2 City Councilor Joaquín Baca noted the unique opportunity for culturally diverse groups to come together in downtown Albuquerque. “The Park & Chill pilot program will be a great addition to the lowrider and downtown communities," he remarked.

Key details include reserving 150 parking spaces on a first-come, first-served basis for lowriders. Participants must follow city traffic laws with strict prohibitions on exhibition driving activities such as peeling out or using hydraulics. Vendors are not allowed within the designated area, and each vehicle is limited to one parking space.

Councilor Klarissa Peña expressed gratitude towards Councilor Baca for collaborating with her office and the Cruising Task Force to provide this opportunity. “Together, with the Cruising Task Force, the City continues its commitment to creating a space where the lowrider community can gather,” she said.
