The City of Albuquerque marked Veterans Day with its annual parade and ceremony on November 11. The event, organized by the Parks & Recreation Department in collaboration with the Office of Military and Veterans Affairs, celebrated the contributions of veterans.
The parade began at USS Bullhead Memorial Park and ended at New Mexico Veterans Memorial Park, where a ceremony was held. Mayor Tim Keller stated, “Veterans will always be recognized and supported in our City, and this day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the profound meaning of their service.”
Keynote speakers included Chief Administrative Officer Samantha Sengel, Colonel Michael Power of the 377 Air Base Wing, and Brigadier General (Ret.) Jack Fox. The Dukes of Albuquerque Concert Band performed during the event. At 11:00 a.m., bells tolled to commemorate the armistice that ended World War I in 1918.
Samantha Sengel shared her personal connection to military service: “As the daughter of a career Army officer, I understand how important it is for the community to show its gratitude to those who have served.” She emphasized Albuquerque's commitment to supporting veterans.
Albuquerque supports over 65,000 veterans in New Mexico and more than 400 city employees who are veterans. Initiatives include economic opportunities through programs like Job Training Albuquerque (JTA) and business assistance via the Business Resource Center.
For veterans facing homelessness, the New Mexico Veterans Integration Center Transitional Living Facility offers support. The city is also fundraising for the USS Albuquerque Memorial at Tingley Beach and investing in enhancements at New Mexico Veterans Memorial.
Community members can support local veterans by volunteering or engaging with advisory boards. More information is available at www.cabq.gov/office-of-military-and-veterans-affairs.
