Scribendi named finalist for prestigious Pacemaker Award

Scribendi, the literary and arts magazine from The University of New Mexico Honors College, has been named a finalist for the 2024 Pacemaker Award by the Associated Collegiate Press. This recognition places Scribendi in the category of Undergraduate Publications, with winners to be announced at the fall convention later this month.

The Pacemaker Awards are known as the "Pulitzer Prize of student journalism," honoring excellence across various media formats such as magazines, newspapers, and broadcasts. Scribendi is competing as a literary arts magazine from a four-year institution.

The evaluation for this award considers several criteria including diversity among contributors and content, quality of layout and design, and overall caliber of published material. The selection process also looks at the range of voices and subjects featured, visual presentation, and content excellence.

In addition to being a Pacemaker finalist, Scribendi has secured second place in the National Collegiate Honors Council awards for its 2023 and 2024 editions. The publication acknowledges its editorial teams' efforts:

For the 2023 edition: Editors were Anna Abeyta, John Scott, Ethan Ward; editorial assistants included Jordyn Bachmann, Jesús Eduardo Sánchez Flores, Madi Hogans, Raychel Kool, Reyes Reynaga.

For the 2024 edition: Editors were Madison Hogans, Racyhel Kool, Reyes Reynaga; editorial assistants included Truchell Calabaza, Maya Capuano, Elizabeth Fredrickson, Addison Fulton, Kadra Guillermo, Addison Key, Gabriella Marez, Mary Martinez, Danh Nguyen, Victoria Nisoli, Ana Olivas, Cyan Rose, Jeanie Vo.

This recognition underscores Scribendi's dedication to showcasing outstanding undergraduate creative work while maintaining high standards in literary publication.

Scribendi is an annual non-profit print publication that features creative work from undergraduate Honors students nationwide. Originally part of The University of New Mexico's offerings only it now includes works from over 900 institutions across the United States. It serves as a platform for creative expression in categories like poetry; creative nonfiction; short fiction; foreign language; visual art; photography; and open media.
